A chance for veterans of Iraq & Afghanistan to speak individually with veterans of previous wars about their experiences.
Since 1970, VCS Inc. in New City, NY has pioneered the use of professionally trained and supervised lay people to provide high level counseling services to residents of Rockland County with a wide range of 'life issues'. Our model of training has been uniquely successful and VCS and its programs have received many awards for excellence.
In keeping with this model, VCS has trained veterans of past wars to provide peer counseling and support for veterans recently returning from combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is thought that this approach may be of benefit to those veterans who are reluctant to seek out government sponsored mental health services, or to whom the VA has not been responsive. It is also thought that a peer counseling program could be helpful to military family members who are not entitled to mental health benefits. Veterans and/or their family members receive these services at no cost.
RNN News covers the new Vets For Vets program in Rockland County, NY - a free, confidential program offered by VCS Inc. to veterans of Iraq & Afghanistan and their families.
